Dabblers bunch together when they are frightened or extremely wary. From the air, spread out dabbler decoys give the impression of safety and comfort. Page 28 I like to use an openingnot a J rig as I would for diversbut an opening between loose groups of decoys. The intention is for the birds to come right at you in your blind and set down in the opening. To make this happen, you have to have the wind at your back, if you can. If you can't, then have the wind at your side so that birds passing into the wind will offer you crossing shots.

When I jumped and shot, the reasoning went, the birds would fly to B where Partner would ambush them as they decoyed. Crony was to bushwhack them when they hightailed it from B to C. With luck, Crony's shooting would send them back to A. All went as planned. I could hear the others shooting after I'd had my usual fortune of missing everything that got off the water. Later, when we reconvened, we found that The Plan had worked, we had all seen ducks, we'd all had shots, and we didn't have one duck.

We buy coffee mugs with duck heads on them, and we dream the old dreams. But the old daysthere and thenare gone. Today, you and I are more likely to be fighting a crowd around the game division outpost that holds sway over the public marsh. Our license numbers are recorded, we enter a blind-draw lottery, our guns are checked for plugs, our shells tested with a magnet to make sure that they hold only steel, and our olivedrab canoe is checked for the state registration sticker. If we get chosen, we set out our own spread of decoysa dozen or twoand wait for a few mallards or pintails to drift by.
