Data sets were obtained over 5-7 days of relatively dry conditions and over two periods of 5 days during which the swamp was continuously inundated with dilute seawater « 150 mol m- 3 NaCI).
Such priority ranking can be considered as a preliminary guide- line to formulate a conservation strategy for mangrove stands as plants are a very important component in the overall conservation evaluation programme. However, other attributes such as fauna distribution, current protection measures, disturbance and threats, scientific and recreational values, etc. should also be considered in determining the ultimate conservation priorities of mangrove stands in Hong Kong. Conclusion The present ecological study shows that the 43 mangrove stands, not including Mai Po Nature Reserve, still remained in Hong Kong and fringed about 178 hectares along the coastlines.
